Lao Bao Prison
Lao Bao prison is located at the South-West National Road No.9, in Duy Tan village, Lao Bao town, nearby Vietnam – Laos border.
Coming to Lao Bao nowadays, the evidence of “hell of earth” is only a partial structure. At the beginning of 1908, the prison was only A and B areas when detained regular prisoners and anti-French patriotic persons. In mid of 1934, more three areas of A, B, C were built with reinforced concrete and equipped with underground tunnels, iron gates, iron doors… In addition, there were functional areas for torture, interrogation, warders, military camps, carpentry workshops, embroidery workshops, forge workshops…
Against the repressive regime of the colonial jail, there had been witnessed a lot of  struggles in the different forms between prisoners and warders to protect the minimum living condition of human beings, and to raise the prisoners’ spirit up.
Over the past two wars, most of Lao Bao prison’s structure were completely destroyed, many buildings just remained apart of their architectures: Areas of C, D, E, interrogators, solitary confinement, blockhouses…
The prison is restored some items such as the statue complex, campus, reception house, museum… for a general view and real felling of the up and down dates of the nation. Visitors may contact to Management Board for more information or make a call via telephone number (+84) 533. 877.861.
On the campus of the prison, wootung trees are wrapped by thorns, which were used to be “torture means” in the past, now covered a large yard with their shade. Somewhere in the gentle wind blowing through the mosaic prison doors this afternoon, a touched felling isn’t spoken out, just let the wind blow away, and hope for peace in land.
